Environmental education in Russian libraries began in 1982, when the State Republican Young People's Library (known today as RSLYA) opened a department of environmental education, which has been functioning ever since. RSLYA is an information, methodology and coordination centre for all Russian libraries that are interested in environmental issues.
Created 10 years ago, the website coordinates all environmental resources in Russian libraries, showcases and analyses libraries' best practices.
For many years RSLYA has been taking part in the writing of federal expert documents that analyse Russian libraries' environmental activities. The Centre's staff are regular contributors to professional press and thematic collections.
In partnership with a number of organizations RSLYA holds competitions. National environmental library programme competitions (1995 2006) have encouraged libraries to develop environmental projects. Worth mentioning are the National Competition of Public Libraries' Environmental Internet Resources (2013), Environmental Leaflets competition (2012), the All-Russia Competition and Festival of Environmental Printed and Digital Publications, Internet Projects, and Events in Public Libraries (2009).
The Centre takes part in international, national, and regional conferences on environmental and related issues, consults and supports regional environmental projects.
An important part of the Centre's work is the organization of courses for librarians (both in RSLYA and elsewhere).
Thus, in 2015 a practical seminar called «The Modern Library and Environmental Challenges. New approaches to Environmental Education for Young People» will take place.
The Centre took part in the Inter-library methodological webinar «Successful library programmes for young people».
The Centre communicates with young people via Prostranstvo EcoClub. This is an informal discussion platform created in 2010 to meet young people's need for accurate information about environmental issues, and experience exchange. The club's main goal is to motivate young people to choose an environmentally friendly lifestyle and to teach them how to be environmentally friendly.
