William and Mary are perhaps the most under-rated British monarchs. Outside Northern Ireland (where William has become a — somewhat paradoxical — symbol of protestant resistance), the king has been largely forgotten by the general public, while Mary — if recognized at all — is known only as a constitutionally curious adjunct to her husband.
