William and Mary are perhaps the most under-rated British monarchs. Outside Northern Ireland (where William has become a — somewhat paradoxical — symbol of protestant resistance), the king has been largely forgotten by the general public, while Mary — if recognized at all — is known only as a constitutionally curious adjunct to her husband. Yet this royal pair ruled at a period of political transformation, and they were crucial to its surprising success. William and Mary succeeded because they showed skills of presentation, persuasion, and consensus-building which had been notably lacking in their Stuart predecessors. As we show, however, they honed these skills during their time in the Netherlands. It is therefore possible that England — if not Britain — was set on a path to greatness by the example of a foreign republic.
