: Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Gervais Larauch et Bernard Pradali s'vadent d'un stalag en Allemagne et regagnent la France. Avant l'entre en gare, Lyon, ils sautent du train, en pleine nuit. Happ par un wagon, Bernard est tu sur le coup et Gervais, responsable de la mort de sa propre femme, lui vole ses papiers. Il se rend ensuite chez Hlne Vanaux, la marraine de guerre de Bernard, pour lui annoncer la mort de celui avec qui elle a correspondu longtemps et qu'il avait l'intention d'pouser. Mais quand Hlne ouvre la porte, elle croit voir devant elle Bernard, et Gervais n'a par le cur de la dtromper. La maison d'Hlne est aussi le refuge d'Agns, sa demi-sur, puis de Julia, la sur de Bernard qui feint de le reconnatre.Ainsi, une trange cohabitation commence. Gervais, prisonnier vad, ne peut songer fuir dans une France sous l'Occupation. Il craint aussi que Julia rvle un jour qu'il est un imposteur. Il se dcide donc l'informer que son frre est mort accidentellement. Elle lui rvle alors que Bernard devait hriter seul de l'norme fortune d'un oncle et que, s'il se fait passer pour Bernard, il saura partager l'argent. De son ct, Agns manifeste des dons de voyance et confronte Gervais en l'accusant de ne pas tre celui qu'il prtend. Elle veut qu'il l'pouse. Mais Hlne n'a pas dit son dernier mot.
