Wood R. W., 39 Easy GEOGRAPHY Activities — 1992 (Science for Kids)
A recent educational survey ranked American students fourth among eight industrialized nations in knowledge of geography. In a sampling of American students tested, more than one in five couldn't locate the United Stater on a world map!
The classic introductory book has been throughly revised. Designed to present landforms and landform evolution to the non-specialist reader, it is a highly successful exercise in communication between expert and amateur. Encouraging the reader to look at scenery with fresh eyes, the author ranges from individual sand grains to the grandiose operation of volcanoes, earthquakes and the movement of crustal plates. Two themes run throughout:the sequential development of landscape and the changes imposed on the course of that development by changes in climate. The formidable effects of glaciation, the countinuing unease of the Earth's crust, the drastic shrinkage of streams throughout huge areas of the globe, the fluctuations of desert margins, and the former wide extension of humid-tropical climate - there are among the many topics discussed in this intriguing study of earth sculpture. The subject is essentially visual, and the book is well illustrated with 198 line drawings and photographs.
