Thousands of short stories and novels are published each year. They are certainly read by a wide audience. Many of these works of fiction are reviewed in daily newspapers and literary magazines. Reviewers say some are very ordinary, some are just ordinary, some are interesting and readable, some are unusual, and some are great. Why are works of fiction declared to be such? There may be many answers to this, but we need not go into these answers, because we have another question before us. And that question is: of this mass of works of fiction, how many works remain in the minds of readers? How many works are forgotten after reading them once? In other words, how many works of fiction are able to defeat time, to prove that they are timeless? This period of one year can be extended even further. It can be extended to a decade or several decades, to a century or several centuries, and the above question can be asked in this broader time context.
