Ivan Aivazovsky (1817—1900) devoted more than 60 years of his life to painting1 and left nearly 6000 works in which he depicted the sea as a symbol of power, courage, struggle and freedom. Aivazovsky—s art enjoyed a world-wide renown. In recognition of his artistic achievement he was elected a member of the Academies of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Rome, Florence, Stuttgart and Amsterdam. After seeing Aivazovsky—s views of the Mediterranean, the great English seascape painter Turner expressed his admiration of the young painter—s work in a poem written in Italian and ending in the following words: L—arte tua ben—e potente Perche il genio t—inspiro!
