'Remember you must die' said the voice on the telephone. Dame Lettie Colston, like most of the elderly recipients of this anonymous call, does not wish to be reminded. Nor does her brother Godfrey, who is as pleased with his own faculties as with the decline of everyone else’s. And Mrs Pettigrew, ladies' companion turned voracious blackmailer, refuses to recognize her call’s existence. Soon a witch-hunt is in full cry, exposing the tangled skein of duplicities and self-deceptions in their past and present lives. But the caller is never discovered. Only a few, blessed with a sense of humour and the gift of faith, can guess at his surprising identity.
