As the poetry of Burns is his best biography, it has seemed only fair, in preparing the second edition of Carley’s essays, to introduce representative poems. In connection with the chronological arrangement, brief introductions seem necessary, and it is hoped that the few comments will stimulate thought and encourage intelligent criticism. Carley’s point of view is so admirable; his criticism is so comprehensive, so fair, so sympathetic; his introduction of biographical material is so effective in interpreting the life and the work of Burns, that if we read it and reread it, if we absorb it, we shall soon come to know the peasant poet.
