The ship is the British light cruiser Artemis, the time is half way through WW II, the location is the Mediterranean, where the Artemis is enroute to Malta. An uneventful afternoon turns into a lethal night action when a major strike force of the Italian fleet moves in to attack. The book is an excellent description of a fighting ship and of the complex mechanism, trained manpower and careful organization necessary in combat. The graphically detailed account leads to a dramatic climax.
