The War is over. Our town has been conquered, and the conquering army-is it Russian? American?-has occupied it in the most unobtrusive way. The Imbach children (and our Edgar) emerge from their shelter and begin their journey through a home town which war, and now occupation, have made into a nightmare landscape. This is a tour not only of the town s devastated present but of its past, it surviving landmarks and its shameful secret history. Our Conquest is a civilian war novel, told from a child’s eye perspective, a black comedy but also a thriller, as the children piece together a world from the shards and shrapnel about them. Their curiosity is obsessive, cruel and relentless.
