From the creators of501 Great Writers comes 1001 Books You Must Read before You Die (2006). It is edited by professors in the field and arranged chronologically by author—s birth year. Each entry is brief, ranging from half a page to three pages. Color coding is used to group entries into eras. A glossary of relevant terms is also included. Coverage starts with Homer, in the eighth century BCE, and ends with Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Adichie, born in 1977. Each entry contains basic birth and death facts and information about the writer—s style and genre, followed by a profile offering mostly biographical information. Many entries have sidebars, and all have lists of —Signature Titles, — divided by genre. Other features include portraits of the writers; quotations; and artworks, photographs, and other illustrations related to the literature. This book would be a welcome addition to a public library. It provides glimpses into the writer—s world as well as engaging illustrations. --J
