On Goes the River is a reader designed to accompany any intermediate level textbook for English as a second language. Its purpose is to give students supplementary reading practice, and to help them to increase their vocabulary and reinforce their knowledge of grammatical structures. You will see from the Table of Contents that particular structures are emphasized in each story. The stories, however, come first; we have not used them merely as a vehicle for the presentation of structure, since this would lead to contrived situations and an unnatural style. Approximately 1,000 vocabulary items are used in On Goes the River and are based on the Thorndike and Lorge list of 1,000 most-used words. Those words not taken from the list are classified as 'new' and are defined at the heading of each story. Although these stories are written primarily to help the English student improve his reading ability, we hope that at the same time they will be enjoyable and informative, and that they will give the learner a feeling of accomplishment.
