The Secret formula is designe as a supplementary reader for upper-intermediate students of English as a foreign language. It contains about 1500 vocabulary items, most of which will be found in Michael West’s General Service List of English Words. Those words that are nat taken from the list are defined in a glossary folowing the list each reading selection. The definitions of the words relate to the particular meaning which they have in the text. In each of the chapters of The Secret Formula, which is a combination of fact and fiction, certain structures at the upper-intermediate level hav been stressed: these are noted in the table of contnts. At the same time, a conscious effort has been made to maintain a natural, fre-flowing style in th writing, and not simply to use the story as a vehicle for introducing and practising grammar. Quenstions and exercises on each chapter follow the story
