Although Matthew Arnold and many other literary lions were not wholly flattering about Byron, few disputed his genius. In his private journals and magnificent letters to intimate friends he recorded with passion, verve and unrivalled wit his reactions to the many crises of his life, to his lovers, friends and enemies, and to his varied experiences as poet, traveller, notorious philanderer and, finally, soldier. This selection, accompanied by a biographical commentary, enables the reader to follow Byron’s letters and and journals in the context of his life. They reveal the complex personality of the man himself-generous, caustic, ironic, playful, passionate for justice, one of the most noble and lovable of English writers.
