It is 1919 and the tubercular Kafka adjures his best friend Max Brod to burn all his writings after his death. Max, of course, doesn’t, goes on to publish all Kafka’s work, write the definitive biography and thereby instigate a whole lit-crit industry. We are now transported to the 1980s. In a middle-class, suburdan sitting-room sits Sidney, a Kafka-besotted insuarance agent who ''would rather read about writers than what they write'', for this is England where ''Gossip is the acceptable face of intellect''. Sidney is working on his Kafka article for SMALL PRINT, the Journal of Insuarance Studies, while his frustrated wife Linda stares morosely out of the french windows, and his elderly father scans the bookshelves in an effort to convince family and social workers he isn’t gaga.
