'Thurber is Thurber' was the helpless conclusion of The Times, after a long discussion of the well-spring of his humour. Thurber himself once described his stories as 'mainly humorous but with a few kind-of-sad-ones mixed in'. To him all is absurd yet understandable. He depicts in simple lines — and words — the pathetic, yet humorous, stupidities of the people of his day and age.
