Felimid mac Fal, Bard of Erin, descendant of Druids and the Tuatha de Danaan, the ancient faery race of Ireland, is a fugitive. Most of lowland Britain and the Saxon shore has become rather too hot for him, and London is no better — a Roman city still (though the Romans are long gone), with its straight lines and ordered forms which nullify his bardic powers. Flight seems prudent, and with his enemies in hot pursuit, Felimid sets sail — only to find himself in the clutches of Gudrun Blackhair, the most notorious pirate on the northern sea. And in such dangerous company, Felimid sets out on a new quest — to the perilous lands of the Norse Gods. Magical adventure in a rumbustious world where natural and supernatural are equally at home.
