The Sound of Butterflies begins in 1904 when young English naturalist Thomas Edgar returns home from a long expedition to Brazil where he went in search of butterflies, especially the beautiful and mythical Papilio sophia. His wife, Sophie, looks forward to his return so they can resume their happy marriage, but Thomas comes home almost mute, unable to speak about anything, let alone what happened in the Amazon. Delving into his journals and butterflies for an answer, Sophie uncovers not just the brutality and greed Thomas encountered in South America, but secrets in their own relationship too. Rachael King’s debut novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Washington Post calling it «a captivating story.»
