Swift J., English Politicall Writings 1711-1714. The conduct of the allies and other works — 2008 (Cambridge)
Аннотация: In the following month, he took in charge a weekly paper, The Examiner, which had just been started by St. John, 2 and he wrote for it regularly until June, 1711. St. John afterwards said, —We were determined to have you: you were the only one we were afraid of.— 10An attempt to assassinate Harley, in March, 1711, greatly increased the popularity of that minister. Swift was much alarmed while Harley—s life was in danger. He had, Swift said, always treated him with the tenderness of a parent, and never refused him any favour as a friend. The efforts of the party were now devoted to bringing the war with France to an end. Harley was created earl of Oxford, and became lord treasurer. The whigs, opposed to a peace, formed an alliance with Nottingham, previously an extreme tory. Swift, who had givenup his connection with The Examiner, composed, in November and December, 1711, two pamphlets in favour of peace: The Conduct of the Allies and of the late Ministry in beginning and carrying on the present war, and Some Remarks on the Barrier Treaty. He also attacked the duchess of Somerset in The W—ds—r Prophecy, and assisted the government by A Letter to the October Club, which consisted of the more extreme tories. The danger threatening the government from the House of Lords was removed, in December, by the creation of twelve new peers, and by the dismissal of the duke of Marlborough from his employments.

Swift J., Gullivers Travels — 1973
Аннотация: Shipwrecked and cast adrift, Lemuel Gulliver wakes to find himself on Lilliput, an island inhabited by little people, whose height makes their quarrels over fashion and fame seem ridiculous. His subsequent encounters - with the crude giants of Brobdingnag, the philosophical Houyhnhnms and the brutish Yahoos - give Gulliver new, bitter insights into human behaviour. Swift's savage satire view mankind in a distorted hall of mirrors as a diminished, magnified and finally bestial species, presenting us with an uncompromising reflection of ourselves.

Swift J., The Sahara — 1978 (The World's wild places) (Time-Life books)
Аннотация: The Sahara covers large parts of Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Western Sahara, Sudan and Tunisia. It covers 9 million square kilometres, amounting to 31% of Africa. If all areas with a mean annual precipitation of less than 250 mm were included, the Sahara would be 11 million square kilometres. It is one of three distinct physiographic provinces of the African massive physiographic division.

Swift G., Tomorrow — 2007
Аннотация: On a midsummer's night Paula lies awake, Mike, her husband of twenty-five years asleep beside her, her two teenage children, Nick and Kate, sleeping in nearby rooms. The next day, she knows, will redefine all their lives. Recalling the years before and after her children were born, she begins a story which is both a glowing celebration of love possessed and a moving acknowledgement of the fear of loss, of the fragilities, illusions and secrets on which even our most intimate sense of who we are can rest. It is the year 1995. A revelation lies in store. Her children's future lies before them. The house holds a family's history and fate. As a millennium draws to its close, and as day draws nearer, Paula's intensely personal thoughts touch on all our tomorrows. Brilliantly distilling half a century into one suspenseful night, as tender in its tone as it is deep in its soundings, "Tomorrow" is a magical exploration of coupledom, parenthood and selfhood, and a unique meditation on the mystery of happiness.
