Storr R., September: A History Painting by Gerhard Richter — 2011

Gerhard Richter is one of the most influential artists of modern times. His painting "September" is a response to the bombing of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, made some four years after the event. The eminent American critic and curator Robert Storr, who has had a long working relationship with Richter, explores both the painting and the event itself, through a very personal account of his experience of being in New York on the day of the bombing. Storr shows, through words, details and comparative illustrations, how this painting is part of a current running throughout Richter's career that responds to traumatic and controversial events, including works based on the bombing of cities in World War II and the capture of the Baader-Meinhof terrorist group. It comes with a foreword by Sir Brian Urquhart.

The present publication consists of writings, whether entire or in excerpted form, chosen by the artists participating in the international exhibition of the 52nd International Art Exhibition. Although none of these texts specifically addresses the artists or the art in the exhibition, their value to those who pick through this volume lies - in addition to the condensed intellectual and literary pleasure they afford - in the insights they directly or obliquely offer into the minds and sensibilities of those who have created the work presented in the Padiglione Italia and the Arsenale

Think With the Senses, Feel With the Mind: Art in the Present Tense, Participating Countries, Collateral Events. [Volume Two] — 2007

The 52nd Bienalle di Venezia ended on November 21 but having visited rather late in its run we are still sorting through an onslaught of visual information, issues and ideas. Having returned from a three week visit including a week in Venice divided between visiting the Bienalle, for two full days at the  Giardino and Arsenale, as well as, some of the numerous pavilions and special exhibitions scattered around a difficult to navigate and complex topography there is much to put in order. We also spent time in several churches to view works by Titian, Canova, and Tintoretto, an afternoon each in the Academia and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, as well as exploring San Marco and the Doge's Palace and the fascinating Museo Fortuny.
