Shaw I., Evening in Byzantium — 1978
Аннотация: There were honest men and thieves, pimps and panderers and men of virtue. There were beautiful women and delicious girls, handsome men and men with the faces of swine... They were all gamblers in a game with no rules, placing their bets debonairly or in the sweat of fear... These are some of the characters in Irwin Shaw's novel. The place is Cannes; the setting, a film festival. The hero is Jesse Craig, forty-eight years old, whose survival is at stake in the midst of this gaudy carnival.

Shaw B., Three Plays for Puritans — 1978
Аннотация: Bernard Shaw was born in Dublin of Protestant stock, in 1856, and died at Ayot St Lawrence, Herts, in 1950. After a false start in nineteenth-century fashion as a novelist, he made a reputation as a journalist-critic of books, pictures, music, and the drama. Meanwhile he had plunged into the Socialist revival of the eighteen-eighties and come out as one of the leaders who made the Fabian Society famous, figuring prominently not only as a pamphleteer and platform orator, but as a serious economist and philosopher, and publishing major essays on Ibsen and Wagner. He broke out in a new direction in 1892 as a playwright, although it was not until some twelve years later that the opposition he had always to face first was over-come sufficiently to establish him as an irresistible force in the theatre.

Shaw B., Man and Superman. A comedy and a Philosophy — 1977
Аннотация: Man and Superman is George Bernard Shaw s response to the request of his fans to write a Don Juan themed play. This four-act drama often preformed without or with an abbreviated version of the lengthy third act can be seen as a simple comedy of manners or, as Shaw had intended, something quite more, an exposition of Nietzsche's philosophical ideas of the Superman. Man and Superman is considered to be one of Shaw's greatest works, a masterpiece of dramatic literature.

Shaw B., Pygmalion — 2002 (Chimera Classics)
Аннотация: Based on classical myth, Bernard Shaw—s Pygmalion plays on the complex business of human relationships in a social world. Phonetics Professor Henry Higgins tutors the very Cockney Eliza Doolittle, not only in the refinement of speech, but also in the refinement of her manner. When the end result produces a very ladylike Miss Doolittle, the lessons learned become much more far reaching. The successful musical My Fair Lady was based on this Bernard Shaw classic.

Shaw B., The Apple Cart — 1983 (Penguin Plays)
Аннотация: 1930. Many of Shaw's early plays were either banned by the censor or refused production. He began the practice of writing the challenging, mocking, eloquent prefaces to his plays, which were sometimes longer than the play itself. In 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Apple Cart is Shaw's comedic play in which the King defeats an attempt by his popularly elected Prime Minister to deprive him of the right to influence public opinion through the press: in short, to reduce him to a cipher.

Shaw B., The Devil`s Disciple — 2005 (New Longman Literature)
Аннотация: Like several of Shaw's early plays, The Devil's Disciple - first produced in 1897 and published in his collection Three Plays for Puritans in 1901 - takes an existing popular theatrical form, in this case melodrama, and adapts it to serve Shaw's dramatic purposes. Two of the ideals that Shaw sets out to attack in this play are the ideal of the family and the ideal of marriage. The play is set during the Revolutionary War and is the fictional story of Richard Dudgeon, an American hero. He revolts against the ideal of the family to the extent that he has rejected his own family. Identifying with the devil has prevented his spirit being taken over by his mother's life-denying religion. Though being a melodrama, it is not without humor, particularly in the character of General Burgoyne. It was Shaws first play that was financially successful and helped to assure his career as a playwright.

Shaw B., Arms and the Man — 2004 (Longman Literature)
Аннотация: In the opening scene of Arms and the Man, which establishes the play's embattled Balkan setting, young Raina learns of her suitor's heroic exploits in combat. She rhapsodizes that it is "a glorious world for women who can see its glory and Then who can act its romance!" Soon, however, such romantic falsifications of love and warfare are brilliantly and at times hilariously unmasked in a comedy that reveals George Bernard Shaw at his best as an acute social observer and witty provocateur.
