This is the history of a new science. Beginning with a little-known discovery in 1896, radioactivity led researchers in search of insight, who eventually encountered the intersection of knowledge and mystery. Mysterious from the very beginning, radioactivity attracted researchers who struggled to understand it. What caused certain atoms to emit invisible penetrating rays? Where did the energy come from? These questions became more and more relevant when researchers realized that the process apparently continues indefinitely, producing a huge amount of energy. The researchers found cases where radioactivity did change, which led them to the startling conclusion that radioactive bodies were transformed into other substances. Scientists in many countries, but especially in the laboratories of Paris, Manchester and Vienna, have solved the details of radioactive transformations. They have created a new science with the help of specialized methods, tools, journals and international conferences.
