Homer, The Odyssey — 2011 (Collins Classics)
HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. Alas that mortals Should blame the gods! From us, they say, All evils come. Yet they themselves It is who through defiant deeds Bring sorrow on them-far more sorrow Than fate would have them bear. Attributed to the blind Greek poet, Homer, The Odyssey is an epic tale about cunning and strength of mind. It takes its starting point ten years after the fall of the city of Troy and follows its Greek warrior hero Odysseus as he tries to journey to his home of Ithaca in northwest Greece after the Greek victory over the Trojans. On his travels, Odysseus comes across surreal islands and foreign lands where he is in turn challenged and supported by those that he meets on his travels as he attempts to find his way back home in order to vanquish those who threaten his estate. In turn, his son Telemachus has to grow up quickly as he attempts to find his father and protect his mother from her suitors. Dealing with the universal themes of temptation and courage, the epic journey that Odysseus undertakes is as meaningful today as it was almost 3,000 years ago when the story was composed

Homer, The Odyssey — 1977 (Penguin Classics)
Muse, tell me of a man: a man of much resource, who was made to wander far and long, after he had sacked the sacred city of Troy. Many were the men whose lands he saw and came to know their thinking: many too the miseries at sea, which he suffered in his heart, as he sought to win his own life and the safety of his companions. Recounting the epic journey home of Odysseus from the Trojan War, The Odyssey - alongside its sister poem The Iliad - stands as the well-spring of Western Civilisation and culture, an inspiration to poets, writers and thinkers for thousands of years since. This authoritative prose translation by Martin Hammond brings Homer's great poem of homecoming to life as Odysseus battles through such familiar dangers as the cave of the Cyclops, the call of the Sirens and his hostile reception back in his native land of Ithaca.

Homer, The Iliad of Homer — 1951
Each new generation is bound to produce new translations. Lattimore has done better with nobility, as well as with accuracy, than any other modern verse translator. I] our age we do not often find a fine scholar who is also a genuine poet and who takes the greatest pains over the work of translation.

Homer, The Iliad — 1975
The Greeks considered The Iliad their greatest literary achievement, and no epic poem in any language has ever rivaled it. Out of a single episode in the Tale of Troy, Achilles withdrawal from the fighting and his return to kill the Trojan hero Hector, Homer created a timeless, dramatic tragedy. His characters are heroic but their passions and problems are human and universal, and he presents them with compassion, understanding, and humor against the harsh background of war. E.V. Rieu s prose translation has the same direct simplicity and subtle elegance which distinguishes his Odyssey; it moves swiftly and confidently through the greater complexity of The Iliad and never fall short of the nobility of Homer s theme.

Homer, The Iliad — 1977 (Penguin Classics)
The Greeks believed that the Iliad and the Odyssey were compiled by Homer, and seven Greek cities claim to be the place of his birth.Nothing is known of his life or date, not can it be proved that the same person compiled both works at the same time, but the quality and unity of the structure in each book indicates one author, who may for convenience be called Homer.Modern scholarship now places him somewhere in Ionia in about 700 B.C.
