Hawthorne N., The Scarlet Letter — 1994
Аннотация: This production closely follows Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1850 novel The Scarlet Letter. In Boston, shortly after its founding in 1630, the Puritan citizenry order Hester Prynne (Meg Foster), a beautiful young woman, to wear a scarlet letter "A" (signifying "adulteress") on her dress for life after she bears a child in the absence of her husband, who has delayed his trip to the New World to conclude business. Despite intense questioning, Hester refuses to identify the father, Arthur Dimmesdale (John Heard), a respected minister who cannot muster the courage to acknowledge his sin in public.

Hawthorne N., The Scarlet Letter — 1983 (The Penguin American Library)
Аннотация: Hailed by Henry James as "the finest piece of imaginative writing yet put forth in the country, " Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter" reaches to our nation's historical and moral roots for the material of great tragedy. Set in an early New England colony, the novel shows the terrible impact a single, passionate act has on the lives of three members of the community: the defiant Hester Prynne; the fiery, tortured Reverend Dimmesdale; and the obsessed, vengeful Chillingworth. With "The Scarlet Letter," Hawthorne became the first American novelist to forge from our Puritan heritage a universal classic, a masterful exploration of humanity's unending struggle with sin, guilt and pride.

Hawthorne N., The House of the Seven Gables — 1981 (The Penguin American Library)
Аннотация: This enduring novel of crime and retribution vividly reflects the social and moral values of New England in the 1840s. Nathaniel Hawthorne's gripping psychological drama concerns the Pyncheon family, a dynasty founded on pious theft, who live for generations under a dead man's curse until their house is finally exorcised by love. Hawthorne, by birth and education, was instilled with the Puritan belief in America's limitless promise. Yet - in part because of blemishes on his own family history - he also saw the darker side of the young nation. Like his twentieth-century heirs William Faulkner and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hawthorne peered behind propriety's facade and exposed the true human condition.

Hawthorne N., The Scarlet Letter and Selected Tales — 1982 (The Penguin English Library)
Аннотация: 'He has the purest style, the finest taste, the most available scholarship, the most delicate humor, the most touching pathos, the most radiant imagination, the most consummate ingenuity,' wrote Poe of Hawthorne, whose novel, The Scarlet Letter (1850) is generally regarded as the first great work of American fiction. It is the story of a 'fallen woman' - fallen, that is, in the eyes of the Calvinist-Puritan society of Boston - and of her daughter and the unacknowledged father. Hawthorne fiercely attacks this society for its persecution of those who have broken none of Nature's laws, yet sympathizes with it enough to be able to regard his 'romance' as 'a tale of human frailty and sorrow'. Of the 'family' he writes with warmth and understanding and on them lavishes the artistic charms that so delighted Henry James.Puritanism, which fascinated Hawthorne, is also the special concern of the other tales in this volume: they have been selected to show how variously he treated the subject. This edition contains THE SCARLET LETTER as well as The Gray Champion, The Maypole of Merry Mount, The Minister's Black Veil, Young Goodman Brown and The Gentle Boy.

Hawthorne N., The Marble Faun — [s.a.] (A Signet Classic)
Аннотация: The fragility - and the durability - of human life and art dominate this story of American expatriates in Italy in the mid-nineteenth century. Befriended by Donatello, a young Italian with the classical grace of the Marble Faun, Miriam, Hilda, and Kenyon find their pursuit of art taking a sinister turn as Miriam s unhappy past precipitates the present into tragedy. Hawthorne s International Novel dramatizes the confrontation of the Old World and the New and the uncertain relationship between the authentic and the fake in life as in art. The author s evocative descriptions of classic sites made The Marble Faun a favourite guidebook to Rome for Victorian tourists, but his richly ambiguous symbolic romance is also the story of a murder, and a parable of the Fall of Man. As the characters find their civilized existence disrupted by the awful consequences of impulse, Hawthorne leads his readers to question the value of Art and Culture and addresses the great evolutionary debate which was beginning to shake Victorian society.
