Browne S.T., The Major Works — 1977 (The Penguin English Library)
Аннотация: The highly modulated rhythms of Sir Thomas Browne's prose encompass a tonal range unique by any standards. His interests included theology as much as embryology, and philology no less than cartography. Of his six major works, all brilliant examples of his art, five are here made available in full: Religio Medici, Hydriotaphia, The Garden of Cyrus, A Letter to a Friend and Christian Morals. In addition there are substantial selections from Pseudodoxia Epidemica, his colossal exploration of 'vulgar errors'. This volume also contains Dr Samuel Johnson's 'Life of Sir Thomas Browne', while the fully explanatory notes incorporate Coleridge's perceptive comments as well as textual variants. The editor's introduction and extensive bibliography will be of the greatest use to student and general reader alike. The cover shows a detail from a portrait of Sir Thomas Browne and his wife by an unknown artist, in the National Portrait Gallery, London
